Labour has a plan for a better, fairer North Norfolk. As well as Denise Burke’s pledges for the General Election, we have a manifesto for the local elections too.
We pledge to build more affordable efficient homes for local people including the establishment of Community Land Trusts, and supporting job creation and apprenticeships through housebuilding programmes. We will also work to ensure energy efficiency for new and existing homes to help reduce people’s bills.
We will push for creation of local jobs that pay a living wage, and establishing the council as a ‘living wage’ council with no zero hour contracts. We will increase council purchasing from local businesses and establish community owned assets to protect local shops, pubs & services. We will also boost our local economy by promoting tourism, better broadband, and phone signal to attract new business & enterprise.
We will protect our local environment by reducing the carbon footprint through energy efficiency measures including reviewing the council’s own premises. We will tackle fuel poverty by establishing community energy schemes, and protect our communities from coastal erosion with effective defences by working with our partners.
Thirdly, we will help local families with the cost of living to ensure our local economy works for all. We will work with local Credit Unions to establish a presence in every town to protect residents from pay day companies. We will seek grants from Europe to increase revenue available, and carry out a whole council base budget review to ensure NNDC effectively uses its resources. We’ll improve health and wellbeing with leisure provision for all, and offer fairness. This includes ending the council tax discount available for second homes, and fighting to end the Bedroom Tax in North Norfolk.
Finally, we pledge to listen to residents and involve them in our decisions. We will provide better consultation and not just pay lip service. We will give towns more control over local arrangements like car parking, recycling, markets, toilets, etc.
