North Norfolk Tory candidate Ann Steward says that ‘no one should be forced to sell their home to pay for care’ (EDP Letters, March 4).
I agree but she obviously doesn’t know or doesn’t understand her government’s policy on care funding introduced by Lib Dem Care Minister Norman Lamb in the Care Act.
This Act brings in a cap on care costs of £72,000. Because this is a cap on just care costs, older people in a care home will face much higher bills for their ‘board and lodging’ expenses and could easily end up having to pay at least £150,000. For many selling their home will be the only way to pay these bills.
It is a con – reinforced by the government’s so-called universal deferred payment scheme which will only help those older people with assets less than £23,500.
So, thanks to Mr Lamb and Ann Steward’s government, any older person needing residential care could still be forced to sell their home in their lifetime.
It’s another reason why we need a change of government nationally and a change locally. Voting Lib Dem is a vote for the Tories.
